taking back roads

November News

Well, we’ve entered into a new stage of life:

image

She only has the top four brackets because she has an expander. I’ll torture turn a key once a day, for the next severalΒ  months. We were first told that her front fake tooth would need to be out during this first phase, which caused a massive amount of stress to the 10 year old, so I was really pleased when she came out with the tooth in. Her speech is pretty lispy and eating has been pretty tricky, but she’ll adapt.

Ben was chosen as November’s Student of the Month. He’s one of the top students in his class and  reading at a level higher than most of his classmates.

Last month J started meeting with the speech instructor, twice a week. In the beginning of school year he was struggling pretty much in all areas, but in the last couple weeks, he has made huge improvements.

Lu has moved to a new school, because I have a new job. The business hours were cut way back at the dessert shop, but fortunately another friend told me of another opportunity! I’m now at a private Presbyterian preschool, assistant in a 4’s class. Part of my compensation is for L to attend the school as well. School hours are:  Monday through Thursday, 9am to 1pm.  L is so happy in her new class and it’s nice that I can peek in on her throughout the day!

M’s parents will be here a week from Monday. It’s been about a year and a half since the kids have seen them, so they’re looking forward to their visit! We’ll meet them in Atlanta, hopefully the weather will cooperate – it has been a very wet November and we have a full itenerery planned!

Today Clemson is playing at 3:30, they’re undefeated and we’ll be cheering them on. Hope you have a good weekend!

September

Wow. This month has been full steam ahead. Yet, also a lot like the movie Groundhog Day. The days are flying by, but it’s a lot of the same. Alarm goes off and it’s go, go, go, get them fed, dressed and out the door. If it’s not a school day for L, I head back home to rest, relax, put my feet up clean up the tornado that came through earlier in the morning and entertain L. She calls its “Me and you time”. ❀ On her school days, I head to work! A dessert shop/kids consignment store {kinda odd, I know, but this is small town America – anything goes}. I mainly work on the consignment side, tagging and pricing clothes. Do you have any idea how hard it is to work when the smell of delicious cupcakes and other goodies is filling the air??

The afternoons depend on the activity..which all kind of revolve around A. I’m either picking them up from school, grabbing them later from afterschool care or waiting for them to get off the bus.

image

I like the days the bus drops them off because those are the days L always gets a nap – we’re each more pleasant to be around, on those days. πŸ˜‰

Some other fun we had this month:

image

Went to the highschool football game – always so.much.fun. I looove football, and that’s OK, because this is the South πŸ˜‰

Went to Dave & Buster’s — a blast!!

image

Such a great afternoon! It’s always nice when we can go somewhere and all 6 of us are enjoying ourselves and there is absolutely no pouting or whining. #winning

image

Last week I went on a field trip with L’s class. She “milked” a cow, fed goats, took a tractor ride and went gem mining. But none of that topped her first bus ride. Great day for a three year old.

image

Her first dental cleaning happened this month. She did excellent! Teeth look good! The other three also had cleanings – J has a cavity 😦 and B&A have been referred to orthodontist. Time to play the lottery.

And the biggest happening from this month:

image

B learned how to ride a bike, all alone!! He decided one day to just get on it and try – BOOM – he’s doing it. Incredibly proud of him.

And now for a big ‘Little Finn Designs’ photo dump. I’ve shared before how talented my SIL is and how cute her items are; we’re fortunate that she shares them with us, in exchange for photos for her etsy shop and Instagram feed.

image

It takes my breath away to see what a beautiful young lady A is becoming. And that Lulu..such a cutie.

I’ll end with this: Just giving the kitty some Love!

image

You’re welcome. Now have a fabulous week!

Finally the Weekend

Yesssssssssss.

image

They are tired.

I am tired.

It was a good first week. They all gave me a “thumb’s up” at the end of each day. I was absolutely giddy to be by myself for a couple hours on Tuesday and Thursday. I’m thinking L should go to preschool five days a week. πŸ˜‰

This weekend we’ve spent the majority of the time outside. It has been very humid but at least overcast and breezy. Unfortunately  mosquitoes are out in full force and we are covered in huge red bumps. :/

Last night we went bowling. So much fun! The kids and myself used the bumpers and A is the only one that broke 100! I had one more point (pin?) than L. I’m horrible! It was so funny watching L, every time a pin fell she would Squeal!!!

image

Really just more of the same for next week, getting back into school routine. Homework will be starting up next week. Times four. Help me.

Hope you have a great week!

Final Countdown

All good things must come to an end, and here we are halfway through August! School starts this week – here’s the last of our fun:

Take me out to the ball game!!
I love, love baseball (probably more excited than the kids about the game)!

image

A pregame parade to honor the Reading All Stars!

image

image

Another super HOT day!

image

image

image

Jackpot!! Left fielder threw B a foul ball!

After the game kids are invited to run the bases!

image

image

The Drive were behind most of game but rallied in the 6th and brought in 6 runs! Final score 7-6, The Drive!

Last Tuesday was the last time to skate. Rink will be closed until October for some much needed updates. Not sure how often we’ll get to skate throughout the school year, but I’m already looking forward to next years session!

image

image

image

I love that they all enjoyed skating, a great family memory, for sure!

Monday I took them to play at their favorite park in Greenville. Probably won’t be back until Spring Break.

image

image

Probably out best summer yet.  Didn’t hear too many, “I’m bored” and only pulled my hair out once or twice πŸ˜‰

July

July ZOOMED by. We start and finish the month with a birthday.
First up, the baby turned 3! Weekend prior to her bday we took a trip to Babyland General Hospital, in Northern Georgia. Grandma Donna and Aunt Alison were also able to join us. L squealed with excitement when we arrived, made my heart explode to see her so happy.

image

image

We even witnessed a live “birth” – kids were mesmerized. If only it was that easy, ha. Abby had the honor of naming the newborn!

image

Baby Abigail Hope

L has asked hourly often to go back!

On her actual birthday I took the kids to Chuck E. Cheese’s – always fun! We also had cake at Grandma’s that evening.

image

Daddy made (and decorated) the cake and it was A-may-zing!!

The follow day we had a small pool party with friends. The guest of honor requested her favorites: Pb&J sammies and strawberries!

Fourth of July was a blast! πŸ˜‰ Friends invited us to join them at Clemsonfest. Live music, several bounce houses, and other free stuff for kids. Hands down, the best fireworks show I’ve seen in a long time! All around great night!Β Β

Clemson paw and flag #merica

The week of the 13th-17th the three oldest went to Cake Camp, and of course they loved evey minute of it! And I loved that everyday they brought home something to share with me. πŸ™‚

image

All summer they also participated in BARK (Books and Reading Kids). Every Friday we headed to the library where they read to dogs.

image

image

Jack, a Pomeranian, is their favorite pup.

Other events:

Boys and L took swimming lessons at the Y. Boys no longer need help to swim! L charmed her way out of everything and hardly got her hair wet!

Saw Minions movie!

image

image

Kids also participated in Furman University research project. I was able to watch behind a two way mirror, so fun to hear their answers.

image

And finally it was B’s 7th birthday!!

image

Uncle John meeting Ben ❀

Ben asked to have a party with friends at the skating rink. He was beaming all day and cried at the end of the night, not wanting the fun to end.

image

image

He chose to eat at Freddy’s because he wanted a dirt worm sundae! Following weekend  Grandma had us over for more ice cream and celebration.

image

These kids are pretty spoiled when it comes to birthdays!

Other moments from July:

image

This girl was on my phone all.the.time. She used it more than I did! #summerselfie

image

image

image

image

She’s not a fan of the camera, which kills me! She’s such a beauty!

image

image

image

Water fun at Grandma’s

image

They wanted to earn some extra money – lasted about 5 minutes. πŸ™‚

And I’ll close with L’s first family portrait. Drawn on her bed. With permanent marker.

image

What am I going to do with that girl?!

It’s been good, Summer.

Hiiiiiii! MIA, I know, but I really just wanted to enjoy the break..

So here we go, here’s June..

We headed to the coast, but not before making a little pitstop in Columbia for the cutest Gamecocks fan:

image

Made the kid’s day!
Next stop, Sullivan’s Island (Charleston), it is just beautiful. I could sit there for hours, one of my favorite places!

image

image

image

image

image

image

So much fun. Unfortunately it was HOT and we didn’t get to enjoy the water as much as the kids would like, only spent one evening at the beach. Oh, and all those shark sightings you may be hearing about- there were a couple of small Tiger Sharks swimming right around us!
Sadly a few days later we woke up to the heartbreaking news of the Charleston shooting. I was really proud of how our state rallied together. The deaths led to the Confederate flag being removed from the Capitol building. After that things felt tense, so much debate and controversy but,  fortunately this hot topic has simmered down.

June not only had a week of super high temps but then it rained. And rained some more. And rained some more on top of that. We didn’t swim as much as I hoped or get out to parks  much, but when we did, we always had a great time!

image

image

image

image

image

On rainy days we took advantage of free summer movies at the theater. And then: Roller Skating. The rink participated in “Kids Skate Free” – 4 kids, I was sold. We went skating every.single.week. B is like a speed skater now.

image

We would go at noon and most times stay until 4 or 5. I had to drag them off. Sometimes we were the only ones there, it was great!

For Father’s Day we took M to his favorite pizza place Barley’s Taproom in downtown Greenville.

image

He’s a great dad!

L said “take my picture” and struck a pose

image

And then a bird pooped all over her arm! It was quite funny, and she handled it well πŸ™‚
We of course had to celebrate the day with some ice cream!

image

We signed up for the library’s Super Hero  summer reading program. A had to read for 16 hours, B needed to read 32 books and J and L had to have 32 read to them (go, mom!). With all that rain, they met their goals in 3 weeks!! Prize was a medal, free milk shake, ticket to Drive baseball game where they were given a free shirt and paraded around the field, pregame (stay tuned for those pics).

My Super Readers:
