taking back roads

home sweet home

On Friday, Winter decided to finally show up. School was dismissed at 10am due to freezing rain and icy road conditions. Conveniently our heater stopped working too.

Welcome to home ownership!

Not exactly sure when it stopped but when we arrived Saturday morning with the first load, the house was COLD! Our neighbor is letting us use a heater and thankfully we have a fireplace and Walmart sells wood! Our first night here we slept all together in our room – which is probably what would have happened being in a new place with new sounds..I wish I could say I’m a roll with the punches type– I’m sure I’ll laugh later, but after working hard all day to get moved in, paired with the thought of how much is this going to cost to fix?! I was a little down. But in the areas that I am weak, Michael is strong and level headed and likes to remind me: It could always be worse.

As I unpack I fall more and more in love with our home. It’s a simple home but that’s what we’re looking for – Simplicity. Corny, I know, but it’s been nice to carve away the distractions.

Kids start their new school tomorrow. We had a brief tour last week and I think they’ll both be happy in their new classes. B will be going in the PM so that will be a nice change to only get one kid ready in the morning. My mom jokingly said she’ll miss her maid and cook. I’ll miss my nanny and laundress! Who knows how many times we would have been late without her help!

20130120-132114.jpg Was hoping (in my dreams..) for hardwood but it’s vinyl. New carpet throughout will be installed tomorrow!!!

Also, if you’ve ever wallpapered a home that you no longer live in and the new residents have taken it down-Not a fun job! You owe them an apology and a manicure. Even though we used this awesome enzyme (Piranha) that ate the glue fairly quickly it’s a pain in my butt forearm.

By the way, it turns out that our neighbor is A’s current teacher! I saw him outside, waved and as we introduced ourselves I realized it was her teacher (Remember, I’m blind so I couldn’t see him until I got closer). A really likes him, but we aren’t in the same district or county anymore so kids will be switching schools, so it’s made it easier when talking about leaving since he’ll be next door. He says he wants to be the neighbor of yesterday – he’s offered us soup, brought over coffee and probably would have scraped the ceilings had I asked!

Now back to work – today we paint! paint! paint!!

There’s a light at the end of this tunnel..or at least a new one hanging in the entry way.

Not the clearest picture I know – my arms were probably weak and shaky from working on the ceilings.

20130115-110733.jpg “Taking down popcorn ceilings is a blast!” Said no one ever.
But it’s done. Kinda. We’re going to leave it up in kids rooms and kitchen for now. We have plans to update kitchen so we’ll scrape it then. Maybe. Or maybe I’ll never scrape another ceiling in my life. I had this great idea to surprise M and scrape our room while he was at work.

Next time I’ll just buy him something.

What should have taken only a few hours, took 3 days- thanks to breaking up fights, getting snacks, wiping booties and kissing boo-boo’s..

But in all honesty, it’s really not hard, just time consuming. And messy!

20130115-112522.jpg Will continue to share the work we’re doing — making this house our home!

Six Months!

Last week Lydia turned 6mo, but we’ve been so busy with the house I haven’t had time to post her monthly pose.

20130107-131441.jpg She kept squirming and knocking down the blanket that I decided to strap her down!

20130107-131615.jpg My mom found the chair at an antique store. She’s not sitting up on her own just yet, but close!

Hopefully next months picture will be taken at our house!!
